Get on the good soul music foot.
"Band of Gold" explores the fabled Motown songwriting team of Holland, Dozier, Holland, the Midas touch trio who created such unforgettable classics as "Please Mr. Postman," "Heat Wave" and "Where Did Our Love Go?"
This engaging musical documentary was produced by Channel 4's Bruce Harper and writer and coproducer Roy McMullen Jr.
Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland were the lyrical wizards behind many of the hits from the Supremes, the Four Tops, and Martha and the Vandellas.
Unhappy with company founder Berry Gordy's reluctance to give them a bigger financial stake in Motown, the three left to found the independent Invictus record label. There, they continued to strike the pop culture chord with such hits as Freda Payne's "Band of Gold," "Give Me Just a Little More Time" by Chairmen of the Board, and "Want Ads" by Honey Cone.
One of the special's grooviest highlights is a shimmying Honey Cone, delivering the group's signature song in a flashback clip. Sweet soul music.
